I'm trying to use the search option here on Barbelith to find an old Invisibles thread in Comic Books by someone who's handle was somehting like "deadgrrl" I think. I wrote an extensive timeline explaining the role of time travel and John A Dreams as God and I want to document it in my own inbox, but for some reason, I only get the first ten topics and no more, even though it says there are 61 topics about "Invisibles"... can someone help me find this thread?

Bang.
Don't even ask why I did that (other than enjoying that thread at the time).

The shortcomings of the search function have been an ongoing topic of dicussion in The Policy.

Which is where this thread belongs.

I know, I know. The search facility is far from ideal.

Bringing this back as a general enquiries form.

I'm sure we've already discussed the 'Fourth Plinth' project in the centre of London but had no luck finding it. I've tried going through all the A&D pages with no joy, can anyone else do better than me before I give up and start a fresh thread?

Did you post about it yourself wherever it was discussed?

Use the advanced search function on google, it allows you to specify a domain. If you've searched three times with different words and can't find a thread then just start a new one.

I've used the google search and it appears that we have never had a thread on it, or even it seems mentioned it in passing, so do start a new thread!

I really don't understand how Google works, but even when directed to search Barbelith only, it still seems to miss a lot. Frixample, a seach on 'plinth' doesn't find this thread.

That's probably because the word was only added to the thread yesterday. Takes a little longer than that for things to appear on Google, I think.

it takes around a week to find barbelith threads, i find.

I'm looking for a thread in which Jack Fear (I think, although possibly somebody else) describes Superman and Lex Luthor (and their enmity) as analogous to the conflicting opposing ideologies present of Hometown and Corporate/Metropolitan values in America.
I've used both Barbelith search and Google search but can't seem to track it down. If any kind soul knows of this posts whereabouts please link it here or pm me. It would be very useful as I'm working on something that may have a distinct parallel to it.
Thanks.

Oh well, that may help me with my searching in some respects anyway. Thanks.
Just to clarify for potential helpers it isn't the The Problem with Superman? thread, although it does make small mention of it.

You know, I did that Google site:www.barbelith.com thing looking for Anna's thread about seeing the copperhead and wishing she had a camera, and nothing I put in brought it up. I remembered cracking a joke about the Russian mafia, and that phrase didn't turn it up. Anna brought it up herself a few days later, but still -- my faith in Google was shaken, and remains so.

grant - do a domain search like - this.

save it on your favourites, so that next time you need something it confounds you no more. The search for the copperhead is the first result.

Hopefully you faith in google has been restored!

Jub: I suspect it's either that google.co.uk is logging pages differently, or else it's that Anna found the damn thread and bumped it up a couple weeks ago (after I tried to find it). I believe she linked to it too.

Regardless, I'll bookmark that domain= thing.

Thanks.

Thanks for the help Jub, appreciated. It wasn't anything from The Problem with Superman? Thread as I've said before though.
(Unless I misremembering the post content)

I could have sworn there was a Convo thread of movie stills with captions containing the names of Lith posters (ex.-a still of Fiver having a psychic spasm in 'Watership Down' with the caption Morpheus: "There's a dog...loose...in the woods!"), but I can find hide nor hair of it. Does this thread exist?

Dibs on starting it, BTW, if it does not exist. I've got the title and everyt'ing.

Oh, start a new one if nobody can find the old one. I think I remember the one you mean, but can't find it either (however, my web-fu is minimal, so that doesn't mean it's not there...)

It'd be fun.

Must've been about a year ago, Smoothly. And I remember it in a very general way. No title springs to mind and I can't remember any specific posts in it, but the idea that it's out there is firmly embedded.

I'm glad you seem to remember it too, Stoatie. Perhaps I'm not losing me marbles.

I will start a new one. If a previous one happens to exist, I'll move for my posts to be shipped into that one.

I want to start a thread about problems that aren´t "real problems". Did we have one like that yet?

Let me explain:
For some people "should I wear my Ray Ban or my Armani sunglasses for the nude neach?" can be a real problem, others get angry when they hear about this ("I wish I had problems like that! Lucky bastard!").

So the thread is about problems, most people would consider themselves lucky, if that was all they would have to worry about. But for the people who have them, they are problems.

So, let´s say, it would be a "t´would be nice to have them" problem thread, where we can share our "lesser" problems without aggravating others. (non passive-aggressive) jokes about these problems would be ok, but not the mentioned anger/envy reactions. And suggestions for problem resolutions would be welcomed.

Maybe in conversation?

HAH! I WISH I had that problem! You don't know you're born ect.

Yeah, put it in Convo, give it a summary like the outline you've posted here. Only a very churlish person would take issue.

Just thought I'd mention something which seems to be vaguely related to this thread (but which might be a topic in itself, or which may have been noted and discussed before in which case this post can be deleted).

When recently using the Board's own search function - successfully - to retrieve a very old (2002) thread, I found that when I added a post, it seems to have created a separate thread, with my post at the very end, in addition to the old one which does not feature my post. Also, that thread did not bump to the top of the threads in that forum, as is usually the way when a new post's added. Should this be the case? It seems peculiar. (If you want the precise example, search the Temple forum using the keywords books and culture.) I presume this may be related to pre-crash bits of the board or 'ghost' threads somehow?

Yeah, this is a bit of a problem. See, what happened was, during the last board overhaul but one every single Temple thread somehow got duplicated. The mods--mostly Cusm, IIRC-- had to go through and delete the duplicates manually. However, when you delete a thread on Barbelith it doesn't actually go anywhere; it just doesn't appear on the index anymore. The 'ghost' thread still exists in a dim hinterland and is accessable via the serch function, Google ect.

Unfortunately, you've posted to the ghost thread. The only thing to do is track down both threads, then repost to the other one. It should bump as per usual.

Yeah, I think you’ve just posted to a ghost thread - a duplicate that’s been deleted without being locked. Try this one instead and it’ll probably bump without any problem.

I'm trying to find a thread called Middle Class Heroes.

Google is finding the threads that reference it, but not the thread itself.

Fig and anyone else searching for something. Have you tried the new search facility?

Temporarily located here.

I've had a quick search and can't find The Middle Class Heroes Thread but maybe you'll have better luck?

Hmm, how bizarre. The first 200 search results on "middle class" aren't it.

I found lots of interesting past threads to read anyway, so the search facility was still useful.
