Monk, what I was aiming for wasn't a potted history of how defecation relates to various magical traditions, but rather an opening up of a potentially very interesting topic for discussion which I believe might warrant a thread of its own.

However, given your misgivings, I might mention that not only is defecation universal, but it is also related to, among other things, fertility (think manure etc), death, waste, and taboo, and - as those of you of a Kabbalistic bent will be aware - the Sephira Malkuth. I might also point to, say, the use of faeces as face and body paint in Yolngu coming of age rituals, in which adolescent males are daubed with human excrement (said by Claude Levi-Strauss to represent 'rawness' and 'temporary death'), and secluded from the rest of the community until their 'rebirth', or to the experiments of various alchemists with faeces in their search for the 'philosopher's stone' (we see an experiment of this sort take place in Alejandro Jodorowsky's film 'Holy Mountain').

Mordant, I see that the thread has already been locked, as per your move. Your dislike of me is well documented, but I hope that the above makes it clear to other, less partial, members of the board that my intentions here are benign. While I realise that there are other substance-specific threads dealing with body fluids on Barbelith, such as the Bleeding Women thread on magic and menstruation, I cannot see why you would reasonably welcome that thread to the board, and not my one, especially in light of the information I have added above. It is my hope that in light of this, you will move to unlock the Magic and Faeces thread.

In the first place, take a look at your opening post and then take a look at Lula's opener in the Bleeding Women thread. Notice that Lula took the time to put some thought into her post, as evidenced by linking to outside resources and multiple paragraphs which served as a jumping off point for subsequent posters. Perhaps if you'd taken the time to flesh out your opening post, hunted down links and references on your own, or related some personal experience. But that's not what you did. You left the work of making an interesting and worthwhile thread to others.

Which brings me neatly to the second point: the Temple Moderation thread is exactly the wrong place to try to expand on a Temple post. The value of shitting, Kabbalistic or otherwise, could have been expanded upon in your opening post if you'd bothered to put the effort in up front. You didn't, hence threadlock.

What else was different about the "Bleeding Women" thread? Oh yeah, it was started by someone who's got a track record of actually contributing worthwhile and meaningful content to the board instead of drivel and annoyance.

Your dislike of me is well documented

As is your contiunal and unapologetic douchery. You're at best a de facto troll, at worst a deliberate one.

but I hope that the above makes it clear to other, less partial, members of the board that my intentions here are benign.

Two votes were required for a lock and three for a delete, yet the request went through pretty sharpish. Gosh, it almost looks like other mods remain unconvinced of your benignness.

Maybe on Newbelith people put on ignore can stay on ignore. Best of all would be if you could, by putting somebody on ignore, also automatically add yourself to that person's ignore list, and if it included quoted material.

Very hasty stuff on the mods part - here's one link that might have been posted in the Douches thread pre-lock:

You know some people are into poo-play not just trans-gender queer politics - give em a fair go!

(Ah, the achingly predictable appearance of one or other of our resident drama-llamas.)

Yes. That is a link that could have gone in a properly thought-out first post, eg. one written by someone who actually wanted to have a discussion and wasn't simply out to wind up the board. Point being, there were no such external refs and no substance, because Glenn didn't really want to discuss the topic but to jump up and down saying "poopoo!" (this being pretty much all Glenn ever does).

Nice dig at the trans/queer contingent, btw! Got to love a plastic trickster, always quick to spot an easy target.

There's not going to be any ignore function on Liminal Nation as I find that a bit rude and obnoxious. Problematic posters will be frozen and/or banned by moderators if their contributions are considered outwith the accepted culture and posting guidelines of the board. This is a process that will be enacted by a small group of moderators who have the responsibility of making that call. The community as a whole will not contribute to this process, therefore we won't have to suffer through any morale crushing 12 page kangaroo court public banning threads that never reach any satisfactory resolution.

Additionally, the applications process for Liminal Nation will go some way towards filtering out contributors whose primary intent is to troll and/or wind up the funny people who believe in magic when you've come back from the pub and have nothing better to do, etc. We want good content and interesting discussion on a range of occult/esoteric/religious/'liminal' subjects. If a contributor is posting material that goes outside of that remit in a problematic or disruptive way - there is no reason for them to remain on the board.

I'm no longer a moderator and I don't read the board much anymore, but could someone put in a deletion request for the other "Magic and Shit" thread. It's just a wind up on Glen's part. I know Barbelith is dyyying but it's a shame to let it go out like this.

Sorry. A bit more seriously, banning is fine when the person you're having a problem with is an out-and-out troll. What about when two people just rub each other the wrong way? Why is it "rude and obnoxious" to use a tool that keeps you from being exposed to things that distress you, so you don't have to skip whole threads or even whole boards? There isn't always a culprit -- sometimes people just don't have great chemistry with each other.

Don't worry, brb, we haven't worked out how to use software to disable the built-in ignore function that comes with your hardware. So for the foreseeable future, manual ignore is still an option.

Mordant

Olulabelle

I've agreed that request.

*Sigh*

My original 'Magic & Faeces' thread, while lacking in much in the way of information, was serious and broke no written or unwritten Barbelith guideline or rule. Nevertheless, it was deleted. My second 'Magic & Faeces' thread took on board various Mods' criticism regarding lack of information, and provided examples of the use of faeces in Magic from at least three different paths, and pointed to an academic study, too. Nevertheless, it was proposed for deletion, on the hunch that - despite its tone and content - it was just a wind up. This deletion was agreed by at least one Moderator who has a history of personal dislike for me.

This being Barbelith 2008, and Tom Coates being almost wholly absent, there is seemingly nobody to appeal to to have the second version of my thread reinstated. This being Barbelith 2008, the is no check to the power of Mods to be able to delete a thread because of unsubstantiated suspicions that its a wind up, or simply because they don't like its author (with a song in my heart indeed). Blimey, I was joshing when, back in the day, I asked Mordant in this very thread whether the problem with the Temple wasn't, in fact, her Massive Power Issues... Now I'm wondering whether the same question could be asked with more serious intent.

Never mind, I've just taken delivery of a box set of 'Allo 'Allo. Vive la Resistance!

Could you please not tell me not to worry about the ignore function being disabled when I haven't expressed any concern that it might be, id? I am making an effort to respond to Gypsy Lantern's comment that the ignore function is "rude and obnoxious" by giving an example of a circumstance in which it can be useful, but which does not involve blaming anybody: such as when two people just don't get along, but neither is trolling. If I haven't done that, please say so and I will try to explain it again.

I just don't like the concept of the ignore button. I don't like the idea of a culture where its actually built into the board software that it is acceptable for someone to just stick their fingers in their ears and say "I'm not listening", if someone else's perspectives are repeatedly at odds with your own. I want people to communicate on LN, not to just put each other on "ignore" if dialogue becomes challenging.

DRR... DRR... DRR...
17:19 / 04.04.08
Yeah, but on LN there'll be an apps procedure and a ban function, and thus no windup merchants.

20:43 / 08.04.08
Sorry, brb, that was intended to be a joke, not really at your expense but more at the expense of LN—we can deny people a technological device for "ignoring" others all we want, but if someone wants to ignore someone they're going to ignore them with the "ignore" option provided by the hardware they were born with, as imperfect as it may be.

And on that note I apologize for not having seen your response until just now. I wasn't intending to ignore you.

Thanks, id. Sorry for taking your comment the wrong way.

GL, I'm not talking about using the ignore function if the problem is with content. I don't find not being able to agree about a matter or share a perspective to be automatic cause for heartburn. I'm talking about a personality clash. I may in fact agree with X's views, but just find X incredibly grating for some reason.

If we had a functional banning system, my ignore list would mostly empty out. The remainder would in fact be people with whom I agree about most anything of significance, but who just rub me the wrong way, and to the best of my knowledge the feeling is mutual. My engaging with these people would profit no one and probably irritate both sides. I absolutely don't see how it's "rude and obnoxious" to choose not to engage.

Is anyone else appalled enough at grim reader's insulting non-sense and abusive tone in this thread to propose a ban on said poster? A firm AYE from this poster, FWIW. Of course, a banning thread would be in order.

Meh - a douche telling me to fuck off by PM isn't really banworthy, or at least wasn't, but on the other hand there's no real reason to make Barbelith a less attractive proposition, which that sort of hijinx _and_ banning threads do. At this stage I am coming around to the wisdom of something like what Nolte describes for banning generally - I'm not sure the community as a whole can survive the decision-making process that we have currently. Maybe the joke about pruning wasn't really a joke after all.

Apropos of nothing.
