OK, official new thread for this, Bendis & Finch's relaunching of the Avengers. Thumbs up, thumbs down?

I liked this. As one online review I read stated, 'it didn't blow my mind, it didn't change my life, but it was a fun, well-done superhero comic.' I agree completely.

Even though it was clearly a set-up that there would be a prison break, I actually felt kind of scared for our heroes reading it because there was a sense of real danger somehow...always a good sign in an adventure story.

Fun to see the Sentry back. There's a character no one's used since Paul Jenkin's miniseries years back, which was ok.

And the Purple Man alone, especially Bendis' scary realistic take on him (what would a sick fuck who could make anyone do anything really DO to people?), is enough to have me very interested and worried for our heroes.

sO YEAH, I dug it. this one issue was significantly better than the entire CHAOS story line. Actually that first page seemed to do a better job oif explaining what happened in those othger 5 issues (was it?)

As for this issue itself. Nice lead in with Electro (who seems fresh out of the MK spiderman). Each charactor was intruduced very naturally which I enjoyed, and the addition of Daredevil was a nice bendisism. Is he slated to be a member as well? I thought not.

I was also glad that in service to the story there weren't any cut-aways to Wolverine or Ironman.
The art was very solid (loved that elevator scene) and I expect it will improve in great leaps. All in all a very solid start IMO charctors that read very familuar.
Cap's wise ass remark seemed to underscore some 6 months of depression.

Wasn't there a "thing" between Jesseca Drew and Luke Cage WAAAAAAAAAAAAAY back in her original series?

I liked the shot of Cap offering a hand to Spidey to climb up. Although I don't know if Cap would ever use the word 'smartass.'

It will be fun to see someone using Spider-Woman. Although I think Bendis is going to play up her pherhomone powers to make guys have the hots for her, which at first was a power I thought he made up for her in this series, but which apparently was one of her lesser-known powers from years back. That's what I read somewhere that seemed reliable, I didn't check the Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe or anything.

And who is the mystery member? Looks like a martial arts dude...Shang Chi, Master of Kung Fu, set for a comeback, maybe...?

I don't think DD will be a member, but you never know. I thought I read months ago that he would be, but the cover of #1 seems to not have him.

I too was glad that Iron Man and Wolvie weren't in there yet. Although I'm still kind of like "Whyyy Wolverine, for crying out loud, isn't he in enough books/teams!!?!?!?"

I found Chaos not really bad but not really good either, although I did think it made sense that Wanda would go nuts (again). A parent's bond with a child is the strongest bond there is (insert "Hulk is the strongest one there is!" joke here) and the idea that her kids were taken away from her and she was mindwiped could really piss someone off. Esp. someone who'd been 'evil' before.

I liked it. As a new Marvel first issue, I don't expect to get an entire story anymore, but this felt like a good first chapter to a Big Deal super-hero story. I also like that the Avengers will get back together over a major crisis, and it's the heroes who are around in the area that will do so.

At its best, the Avengers should be Marvel's Big Deal book with the Big Deal threats, and Chaos didn't strike me as that. But this one, I'm going to read.

Then again, if you don't like super-hero books, this sure isn't going to change your mind.

I give it half a thumb up, I suppose. It was fun and all, but I could never consider buying this regularly... The first two pages were nice, the shot of Cap giving a hand to Spidey was very nice, and the return of the Raft, apparently the same prison used in Alias, was interesting. I suppose I'll see where this is going, but I'm not very invested in it.

Don't you wish Bendis would do something different for once? I loved Torso, and Ultimate Spider-Man is fun for something that requires no thought, but I've really grown to hate the man. Most. Overrated. Comics writer. Ever.

This is actually the first time he's used Jessica Drew. His ALIAS book was Jessica Jones. He originally thought about using Jessica Drew as the main character in Alias but for some reason created Jessica Jones instead.

Yeah, I suppose it's pretty weak to use all his faves, but it feels like he's aiming to slightly change the format - the team is thrown together to combat the initial menace rather than being the super-hero finishing school of pre-'disassembled' Avengers. Slightly more ground level dirty action. Ahh fuck it'll probably piss me off in about two issues, but I'll stick around for a bit.

The breaking out of Raft prison, was used in the end arc of Alias, along with more about the purple man. I jsut felt this to be a re-treading. But i do like the electro side of it.

I also agree with people saying Bendis should do some more non marvel work.

Bendis probably won't do any non-Marvel work soon, other than maybe a sequel to his Hollywood insider comedy book Fortune and Glory, which is a damn funny read.

After the whole Batman/Daredevil thing, I doubt DC would hire him in the near future.

Don't think he's doing anything other than Marvel stuff in the near future, the whole House of M thing coming next year, New Avengers just starting, Pulse and Ultimate Spiderman he'll be on for the forseeable future, Daredevil for one more year, Powers every month...I think his plate seems full. I don't think he's even started work on Fortune & Glory 2, he'll be writing and drawing it so it'll take a while.

He should a Bendisworld Phase 1 sort of thing. Millarworld Phase One was worth it if only for Chosen.

I don't think he's overrated. Daredevil and Powers remain consistently refreshing good reads. What if Ultimate Spiderman is an endless handjob that stopped being fun ages ago? Lots of people want Spiderman Year One, and he likes writing Spiderman Year One. I remember a time enjoying everything he was putting out but it doesn't have to always be that way. Pulse is a waste of time and an embarassment to Alias.
He writes five successful books a month, he doesn't have to write five successful books that we all like all at once a month.

Millarworld Phase One was worth it if only for Chosen.

I have to disagree. 'Millarworld' was/is the biggest damp squib for a long time.
Chosen - Nice idea, totally tossed off for a 'surprise' ending. With added rape.
Wanted - Where did this go? Strong start, repetitive, boring execution. Plus rape.
Unfunnies - Where the fuck is issue 3? I'd have liked this more if it had come out anywhere near on time. I'm sure it's got rape in it.
Run - No show. So what?

Plus he (as usual) promised loads of inter-textuality, and revelations. Guess what he delivered?

The first two issues of Chosen were good, and then a stupid, obvious conclusion. Wanted is enjoyable.

I couldn't actually bring myself to pick up the other one. It really felt contraband. Avatar do specialise in deeply unpleasant boks.

It's a dirty wee thing - pure guilty pleasure. But still not much more than a shock-tactic of seeing cartoon characters giving it to each other and doing crack. the abortion cover to issue 2 was pretty appalling, and makes me wander about the man's politics to be honest. Peter Jackson's 'Meet the Feebles' mines 'The Unfunnies' territory far more successfully.

I have to disagree, I think it's fun, a good, solid read (except for those awful "Hollywood" movie issues, which were pathetic) and still occasionally innovative and interesting. Bendis has a fun new spin on the Johnny Storm/Spidey relationship right now. Ult. Spidey is not earth-shattering, sure, but is it a good, solid, FUN comic? I say yes.

Rumor is it's Daredevil, avoiding his secret ID issues by disguising his disguise for the new team. Not sure if I buy it, though, doesn't seem like a very Bendis thing to do.

Could someone please tell me how the Sentry is allowed on this team? He can't remember his superehero life anymore, almost no other superheroes trust him, and he's the fucking Void!

I have no interest in the Avengers, but seriously, this is bugging me. The Sentry is, subconsciously, a supervillian (well, something like that, anyways). Remember? If the Sentry is back in action, then the Void should be destroying the world, like, every issue, right?

Maybe that is the point of New Avengers. Maybe instead of Loki as the cause and motivation of the team, they will have the Void. And they will tolerate that because they will have the powerful Sentry on their side for any other enemy attacks... except there won't be any because they will be spending all their time on the fucking Void.

Or maybe Bendis, like everyone else, didn't read the Sentry.

Oh, Bendis read the Sentry and liked it, that's why he put the Sentry in New Avengers. He asked Paul Jenkins for permission to use the Sentry and Jenkins was like "Thank God someone wants to use this character I created!" So I'm sure Bendis will address the issue of the supervillain that goes with the Sentry.

The Sentry is SPOILER WARNING, YOU FUCKS a former superhero who had all memories of his existence wiped out by Reed Richards (among others). The reason being that the Sentry is the "good" side of the main character and the Void is the "evil" side. Should the Sentry remember his history and powers, the Void will re-surface and do evil shit.

It's worth your time reading the series. Jae Lee drew it, so it's full of pretty pictures.

I admit Bendis' attention is divded and some of his other books are suffering, namely Ultimate Spider-Man, but overrated is way harsh. He's nailed Spider-Man, made Daredevil consistently interesting, made Avengers compelling (what was wrong with CHAOS? It was short it came to a logical conclusion, and there were real consequences --- unlike Identity Crisis but I digress). Bendis --- I'm gonna catch flack for this --- but Bendis, I honestly think is the closest thing to Stan Lee in the modern MArvel Age. He's knows his characters, he writes entertaining dialouge, he write multiple books and he's taking real risks with the books he writes. Not to mention that Pulse is the only book attempting to tie together continuity in the marvel universe (with She-Hulk).
The first issue of New Avengers is a set-up and while I'm iffy about Wolverine on the team, I'm gonna wait and see...

Besides Handjobs are always nice.

P.S. I wonder about Millar's ethics too, but as long as he doesn't become a bigot it aint my concern.
