I know it's not Old St, but Cut in Euston station is fast, cheap and cheerful - 8 quid for a men's, a bit more for the gels'. Only three stops from Old street tube too.

Greek John will do you lovely for about that. For a little more, there's City Snippers, on or about Strutton Street - 15 or 20 quuid for a men's haircut. But not a MAN's haircut. You leave Greek John with your _past lives'_ hair cut.

No, Greek John was killed last July by Macedonian Ted. One of Ted's customers had been seeing John behind his back (Although that is where one usually sees barbers). Drowned him in the tank of blue liquid they use to sterilise combs. In the end he looked like a swollen smurf. But his teeth were very clean.

Good afternoon. I'm new today, but this is timely for me - desperately need a haircut before I spend Christmas with the prospective in-Laws but am financially challenged. As a female, it's hard to find a haircut for under £25.

I keep thinking I should just head to Mr Toppers or similar - is my natural sense of revulsion about that place justified, or has the hairdressing market just managed to imbue in me a suspicion of all things reasonably priced?

And, if not Mr Toppers, where? Work in Central London (around Warren St) and live in Stoke Newington. Any suggestions?

Have you considered just going close-cropped? I paid $30 for a set of electric clippers over 14 years ago, and other than a $10 sharpening and a $2 tube of clipper oil since then, have never paid for a haircut. Of course, now I'm full-bore head-shaving, but the clippers are still handy to keep the beard nice and groomed.

I love Mr Topper but I require him and his minions to do very little (short back and sides, no shampoo). I'm not sure how good he is if you need something more involved.

The Old Compton Street branch is full of enthused Australians who always seem quite friendly and sympathetic, and although they're often hopped up on doughnuts and dance music it never makes them shaky.

On other inexpensive snips - I tried going 'upmarket' to Supercuts recently (I had a job interview, I thought it was a slightly classier joint). It took twice as long and cost twice as much, and the lady sabotaged me with thinning sheers rather than giving me a decent cut. I'm sticking with the Topper, who has fewer pretensions.

If you can be bothered, go to Fairy in Neals Yard Covent Garden. £7 very fast & they're pretty good, especially if you get the guy from Norway.

Never had a problem with any of Mr Topper's minions, they are efficient and sexy. Alternatively my brother charges a fourpack and can usually be persuaded not to drink all of them until he's done the clipping. Oh and i may still have the number of an alcoholic comedian who will cut laydees' hair very nicely for nothing but will make a pass at some point during or shortly thereafter so i wouldn't recommend him to anyone except the very desperate.

Had my hair cut for the first time in over a decade at Beaucatcher (Stoke Newington) last night and thoroughly pleased with the result - not radical but nice. It feels a LOT shorter when I put it into a plainted ponytail though - I guess I'm just used to all the long wispy bits making a little rat's tail down my back, now it only just reaches my shoulder.

I'm guessing I had four or five inches off at least but it doesn't make that much difference - my hair is now long rather than super-long, and a lot less raggedy all over.

Also, I never knew that a smallish bottle of shampoo could cost nearly £10. I genuinely didn't. Now I do.
