Yeah, he's coming to me. The plan is to live here in the States for a couple of years, then either move back to Canada or go elsewhere.

Zombie Herbert Hoover and William Taft want in on this, too.

I'm sure Kali will keep him well-supplied with beer, though, so he won't ever become ENTIRELY unCanadian.

The new XK has introduced a world first in pedestrian safety, PDBS (Pedestrian Deployable Bonnet System). In numerous pedestrian collisions with vehicles, head injuries occur when a pedestrian's head impacts with the bonnet of the vehicle. However, the injuries are not usually sustained from the bonnet itself, rather the bonnet deforming and the pedestrian's head colliding with the engine block underneath.

I have a new bonnet! It saves lives!

Ok actually I was very happy to read all about my sexy car from in a dorky Transformers kind of way.

I'll get my coat.

As for my happy....

Watching my friend get prodded awake by a puppet during a performance of Avenue Q, with a spotlamp shining on him and the whole theatre pissing themselves laughing.

It sucks when you go to see something and the person you're with doesn't enjoy it, but I wouldn't have missed that one for the world on a stick.

Getting a Ventolin in the UK:

"No you cannot have yr repeat prescription until you have seen the nurse. Take a day off work (unpaid), queue up for 2 hours, stand up, sit down, blow into a plastic tube, do a double back-flip through a flamin hoop whilst whistling the theme to Dynasty, say 12 Hail Maries, then go down the pharmacist who will also give you the 3rd degree about yr meds because he's got a chip on his shoulder about knowing more than the doctors do, also pay seven quid."

Getting Vento in Spain:

"Hello, Mr or Ms pharmacy person. I would like a Ventolin inhaler, please."

"Certainly, here is your medication, that will be about two quid English money. Also have some free shampoo!"

Not so much a happy, as a less unhappy, but I've discovered that, even for me, booking an appointment for a haircut and buying a new bag can really take the edge off being dumped somewhat.

I'm SO butch.

My happy involves finally being able to source a torrent for "Takin' over the asylum", an old Scottish six-part drama in which a young David Tennant, playing a manic-depressive wannabe DJ, embarasses his older self with his fresh-faced, slightly over-eager just-out-of-drama-school performance.

I've not seen this since it was last on telly an age and a half ago and it's bloody good!

Today a forty year old caller used the phrase, with no trace of self awareness, humour or irony, "He's a ninja, I'm a rasta, if he comes at me with nunchucks I'll kick him."

Then the Control Room radio started to play Curtis Stigers' I Wonder Why.

Then Ray Liotta asked, "Is this Heaven?" and I said, "No. It's Netley," and he said, "Funny, I could have sworn this was Heaven."

Haven't been to the happy thread for a while, so this is the first time I heard (read?) about Kali and Matt's good news, so I'm happy for them. Don't unCanadian yourself dude, try to Canadian her up!

Also (and Kali will also apreciate this), I'm happy because Season 2 of Doctor Who is finally airing here at home. We're at Rise of the Cybermen part 1 this week. I gotta say, Tennant is cool and all (very cool, actually), but Eccleston will always be the Doctor in my mind (and poor Mickey, can't get a break, can he?)

Finally, my sugestion for a kitten name seems to be very well received in the other thread, which was a nice surprise for my own little ego...

I ordered EndNote yesterday with the dreary expectation that it would as they claimed take 5-10 working days to get here. Surprise! I've just received it from the courier. No waits to get the fresh portable I've been lent fully equipped for work --> happy me. May many blessings rain down upon the lovely dispatcher at Adept Scientific who's made my day.

Hi iamus - only recently, a friend was enthusiastically talking about 'Takin' Over The Asylum' - neither of us recall it very well other than it was great and.. did it have the equally great Ken Stott in it?

Anyway I forwarded your posting to her and got this excited reply:

what is a torrent and yes please! Oh my god I thought I'd made it up! Please get for me!

So; can you tell me where you sourced it? You'd make her day...

Grateful for your help.

Middle of the night I sent an email off to an artist asking questions about the material he used in a film. I expected to be ignored or at the very least have to wait a few weeks for a response. I woke up with a very helpful and encouraging reply waiting for me in my mailbox.

My day has been made.

Did not have to retype thirty-plus pages at lightning speeds today, because someone very sweetly, and presciently, had converted the file for me a month ago and e-mailed it. Just noticed at the last minute.

Got a phone invite for a very nice fellowship/retreat on the east coast, with paid meals and readings and so forth.

In approx. 18 hours, I'll feel like an imposter, a fraud riding the waves of far more talented and greatly sympathtetic friends and colleagues, but right now? Happy. So happy. I do the happydance and kiss the cat happy.

Happy.

MattShepherd: LARGELY ABSENT!
14:49 / 13.08.07
Listening to the news on the radio this morning and the Canadian Army has bought some huge new piece of hardware -- a giant cargo plane -- to allow them to deal death more effectively and on a more global scale than ever before.

Which would normally upset me, but during the little procurement tour on the radio (some army dude rhyming off the reasons this was a good idea), what sounded like the local high-school band was playing an astonishingly peppy rendition of "The Final Countdown".

All parties were clearly oblivious that playing a zippy Boston Pops Brass version of a song about blasting off to certain death in deep space (and assumed by most to be about nuclear war, even though it's not) while unveiling military equipment may not be... appropriate.

And it made me think of Gob on Arrested Development, which is never a bad thing.

I've got the old original crossbows and catapults game. It was fun. Ofcourse my brother and I used the weapons on each other more than in any game. Good times, good times.
