With Sharon's popularity crumbling in the latest polls, could a move by Arab states, prompted by Saudi Arabia, to recognize Israel in return for Israel's withdrawal from the Occupied territories, do anything to stop the violence in the region?

It's the only chance I see for any of this to come to an end.

From what I hear from my friends in Israel, who were comfortably liberal-leftists before the current intifada, Barak-supporters and the like, there is a general recognition that ultimately the only way this can end is in the two-state solution and a complete withdrawal from the territories. It's just a matter of how many people get killed before that happens.

I think what's lacking is any leadership on the Israeli left to take this opportunity. Sharon will never do it himself, obviously.
