I've been obsessing over Dogmanstar *again* so I thought it might be a nice idea to start a thread in which people might suggest similar sounding bands.

So, who else can you recommend that does that sort of swooning, ballardian sex pop thing? Um...

First thing that really springs to mind is Diamond Dogs, or perhaps Aladdin Sane, by David Bowie. They both have a similar kind of theatrical nature to DMS. Diamond Dogs would share some of the sci-fi-ness that DMS has, while Aladdin Sane has more rocking tracks (Watch That Man, Cracked Actor) along the lines of This Hollywood Life or Heroine.

Another obvious suggestion that may fit with your mood Echo and the Bunnymen specifically the OTT pomp of Ocean Rain- also Bowie inspired and you can't argue with tracks like Killing Moon, Silver or Dancing Horses. Epic heartbreaking string arrangements blending with perfect pop.
