Confronting Your Fears

I've always been scared of big fairground rides. Roller-coasters etc. I'm not scared of heights, just of man-made, wobbly death traps, that make your stomach fall away. Well, a couple of months ago we scored some comps for a big theme park, and the moment came when I was standing in the queue for the Dragon Khan roller-coaster. One of those twisty, loopy ones. I backed out the first time, but later that day I finally made it on. Not looking too feeble in front of a particular woman was only 50% of the reason. It was all over very quickly, and to be honest, it was so brain-bashingly violent, that I didn't have time to feel scared. Not sure I would do it again soon, but I'm very glad to have done it.You'll never get me on the 100m vertical drop machine though.

I´m afraid of all kinds of social interactions. When I had to start working in 1993 it was hell. For example, having to answer a telephone was pure torture. One of the very first calls, the woman at the other end asked me if I am insane and I hung up on her. Later on my boss asks me, what happened. Turns out, it was his wife...

It got better with the years, but I still have to bring myself to socialize. Meeting people is fine, once I´m there. But until the moment, I for example step into a restaurant, one big part of me just wants to go home. And it can take me weeks to find the nerve to call someone back.

Standing in front of a class teaching was really hard work at first, though I enjoy now (most of the time). It's the marking I'm scared of!

This may come as a surprise to any of you who know me in meatspace, but I feel exactly the same way. I can meet people fine if I'm meeting them in a pub- I'm comfortable in pubs, and I can turn up a few minutes early and read or something. Strangely, I actually love socialising while it's happening- beforehand I'll generally not want to go, and will just want to stay at home.

I'm the same with holidays, or excursions of every kind- I've never had a bad holiday, but right up until the moment I leave I'm trying to think of ways to get out of it. Apparently my mother is the same way. It's weird.

I'm the same... it's why I rarely plan any kind of social event with more than one person and never really make any plans more than a few days before. Invariably when the moment arrives I just won't want to do anything.
