Off the top of my head, there's flimsy high school fighting anime Tenjou Tenge, whose second male lead is African/Japanese martial artist Bob Makihara.

But the depiction of African-descended people in Japanese anime and manga tends to be kinda retrograde. Barret, the Mr. T lookalike from Final Fantasy VII, is pretty much the industry standard.

I've just finished watching Sailor Moon episode 17 [+] [-] Spoiler And it was brilliant, after continuosly walking blindly into traps and getting bailed out by Mercury, Mars, Luna, and Tuxedo Mask, Usagi kicking ass after everyone else arrived just in time to bite the dust, and never once doubting herself or being a moron was quite a poweful moment for the series.
