I'm nearing completion of the first draft of my first solo screenwriting venture, entitled The Ballad of Johnny Lee Tonguebath , and I'd like some advice on where to proceed from here. Originally, I was planning on just shelving this once it was completed, as after 50 or so pages, I wasn't satisfied with how it was coming out. But after a few month 's layoff, I've come into a creative spurt where I can write no wrong. I feel incredibly confident about my story, characters, and gags.

I've got about 120 pages now, and the first draft is going to run about 150 pages, which I plan to finish within the week. It isn't surprising to me that I overshot the 120 page mark, as my outline was jam-packed full of ideas and I developed more as I wrote. Besides, in between the time I started the project and now I've managed to get a copy of Final Draft, and I'm planning to do my rewrites by typing in the whole damn thing again into Final Draft.

So, aside from me braggin with how pleased I feel with myself for getting this far (my only similar project was a collaborative screenplay I wrote in 3 weeks last year for Project Greenlight, which, for dumb shit, was also quite funny), I was wondering if anyone had any advice on what to look for during rewrites, common pitfalls, mistakes, etc. I have a few screenwriting books, but frankly I cannot stand to read them. Too self-important.

So, what's yr editing process like? Do you ahve other people read your shit and offer suggestions?

There is a screenwriting competition with a deadline of March 1st that I want to enter, so I have to move quickly.

whether or not you LIKE reading screenplay books is immaterial to the fact that you MUST read robert mckee's book _STORY_ unless you have already gotten an exec to say they want to buy it. and even then it'll be fuckin' helpful. who cares if he's an asshole -- he'll get you to write better screenplay.
