Mother's day gifts: I finally thought of something that isn't lame

I never know what to get my mother for mother's day (it's on sunday, in case anyone's forgotten), and she never tells me what she wants, so I usually trust one of my sisters to do the shopping. I provide what financial support I can.

But this year, I got sick of it, and decided to get her something decent. Well, it's just some books, but they're good books. Dig this, cats:

My copy of Alan Watts' The Book. Anyone who has read the introduction will catch the irony of a son giving it to his mother. I figure it will give her a bit of insight on how I think about things.

The Rumi collection, a book of the Sufi poet's writings. Good stuff. And it's, y'know, poetry, which I figure isn't a lame gift for mother's day.

The Tao of Pooh. I figure she'd like this better than the Tao te Ching. Stuffy old Indo-Chinese man or lovable honey obsessed bear? Come on, it's a given.

So these are my gifts. Lame or not?

sounds good to me. but then again, I dont know your mom

last year I got some good booty, including a little vodoo doll kit from my daughter (and her dad) that had a note in it - "do not use on daddy"

this year Im getting my mom a basket of goodies - she likes tear-jerking stuff, and this year Im pulling out all the stops

Not at all lame. The sort of thing that I might do, were I not penniless and 4000 miles away.

oh look, it's the world's smallest violin and it's playing just for me.

On a vaguely-related note, how come we have two Mother's Days? Didn't we celebrate this back in March?

Did we? I thought it was the same date in the UK as the US. I'm not sure why I thought so, but there it is.

Oh, thank God. That UK/US thing gets me every year. Anxiety over.

luckily my mother is a raving lefty and thinks mothers day is a capitalist plot which we sprogs must not buy into.

apparently they have several mothers days a year in germany.
