I think Barbelith works quite well without letting it get infested with a type of creature best described as "a shapeless congerie of protoplasmic bubbles, faintly self-luminous, and with myriads of termporary eyes forming and unforming as pustules of greenish light all over the tunnel-filling front that bore down on us."
